 MEMBERS CHAMPIONSHIP 2009

The British Conger Club held the 2009 Championships over the 4th and 5th July 2009 and the results are listed below:

Saturday Winner(most eels caught) - Tie between Kevin Clark and Keith Bebb.

Ladies - Yvonne Kitt – 200 points.

Four Man Team Winners – Navy Boys - Neil Barnes/Jimmy Bond/Malcolm Ruff/Kevin Clark - 680 points

Four Man Team Runners Up – Mixalot – John Welstead/Rikki Kelly/Mick Roberts/Dave Ball - 600 points

Top Boat – Saturday – Mirage – 2,000 points

The weather was not conducive to the fleet being able to fish the distant wrecks on the Saturday and the boats were restricted to inshore marks.

No fish were caught that were eligible to be weighed and consequently points awarded for returned eels decided the day’s position.

The Sunday morning arrived with the weather allowing the Commodore, in consultation with the Festivals Officer and other committee members, to allow the fleet out at 7.50am.  Unfortunately, after negotiations with the on-the-spot skippers, it was decided that the weather had turned for the worse meaning that fishing was abandoned with boats returning to port at 11am.  No eels were caught on that day.

On return to port, many anglers expressed their disquiet at the competition being curtailed but it was agreed that using the results from Saturday an earlier than usual prize giving would take place at 1.30pm.

Due to the day being cut short, skippers were approached for a discount on their fees for that day which resulted in them offering a £5 reduction.  At a subsequent committee meeting, and following numerous complaints from competitors, it was agreed that each participant would be refunded the amount of £45 from club funds, in a one-off gesture of goodwill.

There was no Individual Champion for the very first time as no eels were weighed in over 40lbs.

As there was no individual winner on either day, all monies raised from the pool (£400) and the Reg Quest Memorial Trophy (£200) was donated to the RNLI.
