Such is the attraction
of conger, anglers from the USA, Holland, Scotland and many other areas far from
the South West were among the 70 competitors in the British Conger Clubs
Championship.
This, the 46th event was based on Plymouth’s Mount
Batten Watersports Centre and fished at wrecks within a twenty-mile radius.
Despite winds up to force six, 210 eels were caught during the two sessions but
just 7 of high weight were brought to the scales.
Gary Galbraith of Rochester a
familiar figure on Plymouth charter boats over many years won the title with a
fish of 64 lbs 13 ozs, a clear margin over runner up Martin Regan of Plymouth
and Newhaven’s Chris Martin who had fish of 57 lbs 12 ozs and 56 lbs 8 ozs.
There was a tie in the Ladies Category between Pam Toms of the Isle of Wight and
Kath Lavis of Plymouth.
The Islanders Derek Toms, Pam Toms, Jeff
Hoey, and Steve Beare were the overall Team Champions with 1180 points, a narrow
victory over Black Country Danglers Kevin Lindup, Paul Keeling, Michael
Banks and Gary Galbraith.
Plymouth’s Kingfishers and the Seagalls
tied for first place in the private boat team category each having 560 points.
Top charter boat on Day 1 was Roy Strevens Tamesis and on the final day
Shaun Brett’s Size Matters, the former winning the skippers prize by
virtue of Galbraith’s Championship fish.
The leading private boat was Trio
owned and skippered by Roger Mc.Dougall.
The Reg Quest Memorial Trophy
for which there is a special entry raised £300 for the RNLI and the trophy was
shared by Galbraith and Derek Toms both achieving eleven returns.
The event had it problems as usual as the weather did not
play its part and the second day was cut short. Unfortunately there was little
spectacle to watch as few fish were landed. The committee also had a tough time
with a protest. Such are competitions.
PS. The complaint that the committee had to deal with can be viewed on the
MESSAGE BOARD and was sent in by PAUL MARIS BCC Member.
Individual Results
The BCC will always resist direct cash prizes, but are happy
to have a pools concept.
